    PICTURE BOOK II
    32 Original Lithographs
    by Jean Charlot
Los Angeles Zeitlin & Ver Brugge 1973
    Copyright 1973 by Jean Charlot
This is a Limited Edition No. V (#5?) of 1000 copies printed.
Hand Numbered and Signed by Jean Charlot & Lynton R. Kistler
Softbound in Wraps, Fine condition in Rare Slipcase, unpaginated but approximately 75 pages with an INDEX AND Signed and Numbered COLOPHON Page at the rear, measures approximately 8 3/4" x 11".
ALSO INCLUDED:  A KEI VITI Promo Flyer with Order Blank.
This is a full double page presentation, printed on all four sides that presents one large color image and four additional small sized "b/w" selections. It has been folded in half.
The Slipcase is printed tan paper over board with an unprinted spine. It is clean with only the slightest bit of rubbing, no fading, bumps or separation at the joints.
The wraps are matching tan stock with printing on the cover and spine. The surfaces are completely clean, straight out to the corners with just very slight rubbing to the edges secondary to sliding in and out of the Slipcase a few times and slight fading to the spine, otherwise free of any type of stains, bumps or tears.
The interior presents contents in As New condition. Age toning is not noticed, no foxing and no previous owner indications.  The Colophon page with Presentation, Hand Numbering and Signings is located at the rear.    PICTURE BOOK II was bound in the French Fold fashion whereas the upper edge of the pages is a fold joining it to the following page.  These pages are uncut; the opening to view contents being a privilege reserved for the first owner.  Remarkably, but for the Title Page, the pages of this PICTURE BOOK have never been opened.  The photos furnished with this review were taken as well as possible considering the unopened state.
[We have included 5 additional images from a another copy simply to acquaint unfamiliar buyers with the content.]
Jean Charlot was born in France in 1898 and educated at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He served in World War I prior to moving to Mexico in 1920. A prolific artist, printmaker and educator, Professor Charlot was affiliated with a number of mainland universities and relocated to Hawaii in the early 1950s, retiring in 1966 from the University of Hawaii as Senior Professor Emeritus. A truly remarkable artist and gentleman, Jean Charlot’s work is known throughout the artistic world

(Excerpt from Jean Charlot's PICTURE BOOK II)
"Charlot’s Picture Book of 1933. That book has become something of a classic for the artist’s original use of multi-color lithography. He would prefer to call his prints "chromolithographs," harking back to the popular prints of the nineteenth century. He has the ability, almost unique in the present century, of making color separations, sequences, and combinations entirely in his mind. Each separate color, which he draws in black on the plate, carries only a portion of the design; none is a complete image. The picture appears only when all seven or eight colors blend together at the end of the printing run."

nique in both style and coloring, PICTURE BOOK II presents 32 Original Chromolithographs, each with a Title and individual Text notation by the Artist.
Printed in a Limited Edition of only 1000, each is numbered. This work, now revered for its excellence has become quite scarce with many of the copies having been pieced out over the years for solo appreciation. This PICTURE BOOK II, one of the remaining few in its Original Slipcase, in beautiful unopened condition plus the KEI VITI Promo flyer is a true prize.  For Artisans and Appreciators, either side of the Pacific, it would make a wonderful addition to a fine collection.
