DESCRIPTION: This is a Beautiful Intact Antique Chinese Hand Made Split Bamboo Sewing Basket made in the late 1800's to early 1900's for the American Market. Import Dates from Guandong Province, China into Coastal Cities in the USA are stated to begin around 1880 and continue until about 1930 according to a reference book by Betty-Lou Mukerji called "Chinese Sewing Baskets". The Sewing and Tea Baskets were sold in the "ChinaTown" sections, (San Francisco, Boston, New York, etc.) and were very popular to the point that many people can recall seeing one of these beautifully decorated baskets in an elderly Relative's home. Typically the sewing baskets were decorated with oval or round furnace wound Chinese Beads called "Peking Glass", Chinese Coins, beaded and elaborately knotted Silk Tassels, and one or several "Peking Glass" circular bangles, which could be used as lid handles. The baskets ranged from plain, no beads or embellishment to highly decorated, such as this basket. There were several shapes, but the circular lidded basket was most often seen. This basket, in addition to the beads, coins, silk tassels, and Turquoise Peking Glass Ring also boasts an intricately woven design on the top, and a secondary liner inside top and bottom. Truly a fine Antique example of the highest Quality, and with absolutely beautiful colors!SIZE: Basket measures ~8.25" wide X ~3.25" tall. Basket inner rim measures ~8".
