American troopship REPUBLIC (ex-Hapag PRESIDENT GRANT of 1907)

Port stern view on a sepia-toned postcard of the U.S. Government troopship REPUBLIC of 1917 slowly under way and with tugs at her stern.
This six-masted liner was originally launched in 1903 for the Leyland Line but was acquired incomplete by the Hamburg Amerika Line.  Completed in 1907 and renamed PRESIDENT GRANT.
She is seen here in U.S. Government service as the troopship U.S.S. REPUBLIC during the First World War.  At the end of hostilities, she was completely refurbished (having two masts removed) and entered service for the United States Line in 1924 as REPUBLIC.
NOTE:  We are also listing one lot for this ship as REPUBLIC for the United States Line.
This lovely postcard has handling wear on the lower left corner but overall, the card is in very good condition.
